White Paper

IBM Watson IoT Platform with Blockchain for Railroad Communication  and Commands

Project Description:

- Securely receive data from and send commands to devices: for "Positive Train Control" systems such as onboard speed control units, navigation systems, parts diagnostic devices, trackside waystations, track switches, railroad crossings, communication based train control, automatic train control, automatic train protection, and automatic train devices.

- Using industry-standard MQTT protocol (OASIS ratified) to connect devices and applications. MQTT is designed for efficient exchange of data to and from devices in real-time.

- Data imput to blockchain distributed ledger

- Manage devices, data, and commands quickly and easily

Why MQTT over traditional radio data transmissions?

There is no database for manual transmissions. The Watson IoT platform utilizing MQTT logs all data transmissions in the IoT platform as well as publishing the data on a selected blockchain.

What is Positive Train Control and why is it important?

Positive Train Control (PTC) is an advanced system designed to automatically stop a train before certain accidents occur. In particular, PTC is designed to prevent: Train-to-train collisions. Derailments caused by excessive train speed. Train movements through misaligned track switches. In 2008, Congress required Class I railroad main lines handling poisonous-inhalation-hazard materials and any railroad main lines with regularly scheduled intercity and commuter rail passenger service to fully implement Positive Train Control (PTC) by December 31, 2015. In late 2015, Congress extended the deadline by at least three years to December 31, 2018, with the possibility of an extension to a date no later than December 31, 2020, if a railroad completes certain statutory requirements that are necessary to obtain an extension.

Project Goals:

Launch the first IoT Device command and control center integrated with a blockchain digital ledger for railroads.

Join the "Blockchain In Transport Alliance"  and test our platform with Warren Bufett's Berkshire Hathway "BNSF Railroad" who recently joined the alliance.

Integrate North American Railroad devices for an access fee paid in RAILS.
